Formula Drift Round 1 in Long Beach

formular drift long beach 041413The 2013 season of Formula Drift got off to a strong start with yesterday’s Round 1 competition on the streets of Long Beach, CA.
The competition was held in the final 3 turns of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach course on Long Beach’s shoreline. The venue was packed with devoted drift fans, vendors, and a car show featuring a variety of custom cars.
There were some surprises, like Gittin knocking over the final clipping point in the finals, and the match-up between Fredric Aasbo and Daigo Saito that required do-over after do-over because the judges were so split on the final decision until finally letting Aasbo continue through the semi-finals.
The final competition was won by Daijiro Yoshihara in 1st, Vaughn Gittin Jr. in 2nd, and Chris Forsberg in 3rd place.
I got some fun shots from way up in the cheap seats and put together a short video in case you weren’t able to make it out to the event. Enjoy!

P.S. If you missed yesterday’s event, you can catch additional drifting events next weekend at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Note that instead of last year’s Formula Drift “Team Drifting” competition, they will be having the inaugural Motegi Racing Super Drift Challenge which will feature nighttime drifting.
