I had the pleasure of attending the 2012 Art Center Car Classic today at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. The event showcased an excellent group of distinctive vehicles including American and European classics, hot rods & customs, supercars, concept cars, among others.
The event also showcased work from designers like Ron Hill. Hill is an Art Center alumnus who was presented a lifetime achievement award today for his body of work, which includes design credit for the Cadillac Eldorado, Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Pontiac Fiero, among many others.
The event was carefully curated like an art show, with distinctive vehicles representing a variety of important genres in automotive design. It was low-key and the setting in the hills of Pasadena was beautiful. Tours were also offered of the Art Center campus, including the Transportation Design Department.
One of the things I tried to wrap my brain around was the idea that a designer needs to anticipate the unexpected and to design the unknown, because in a way what is familiar can be deadly when competing against other designers. Once I realized what a true challenge this must be, I appreciated the challenge that designers face on an everyday basis. Check out our photo gallery below to see some of the great vehicles showcased at the show.
